I bought this piece of art on Tuesday. The gallery at work had new art hung on Tuesday with a display entitled "Art from the Other Side"

"Art from the Other Side" includes a truly remarkable body of work from artists who cannot easily be defined by a particular movement. We hope that viewers are moved emotionally by the raw and earnest offerings of this wonderful selection of artists."

I saw this piece and feel in love with it. Nikkie Rogers created this mixed media piece in 2011.

I like the size, the design and visual texture. I also liked the price, $35.00. I called immediately and purchased the piece.

I am an artist and know how important it is to be able to sell my work. When I connect with a piece of art, I consider purchasing it. When was the last time you supported your local artists?

Trellis Lace Scarf Bind-off Oops

Ever have one of those experiences when you thought the project was going to be perfect and then discovered a DROPPED stitch? Trellis Lace Scarf by Yellow Dog Knitting is a perfect simple project when I don't want to concentrate too hard but want to have relaxing knitting. I knit this using Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn on size 7 needles. I changed the pattern by casting-on 42 sts. I'm happy to say I fixed the bind-off. I will block the scarf before giving it away. I would knit another version of this scarf. BTW: The Lucy Neatby DVDs can be found here. I have most of them and learn from them each time I watch them.

Knitting at Dirty Franks

I took two co-workers to Dirty Franks for lunch today. The menu is based on hotdogs. The menu give lots of options for hotdogs and beer on tap.

I enjoyed a Sriracha Slaw Dog as a lettuce wrap. I don't recommend the lettuce wrap because it gets messy. I also had three pretzels with salt. They were delightful.

I'm knitting the Thorpe hat (Rav link), a design by Kristen Kapur, using size 10 DPNs with a bulky baby alpaca yarn. I'm supposed to be able to get the entire hat done with just one skein of yarn. Fingers crossed. The hat is a surprise gift for my oldest brother who wants something to keep his ears warm.

Knitter's Manifesto: Artist's Edition

I received the Knitter's Manifesto: Artist's Edition as my holiday gift. It's a lovely collection of essays from Brenda Dayne of Cast-On podcast fame. I've shared my love for Brenda in a previous (fanboy) post. The high quality recordings are excellent essays delivered by Brenda. It's like sitting down and having tea with Brenda. Tea with Brenda is something would I would enjoy. Here's a picture of the items that came with the Artist's Edition. Hurry, because there aren't many copies left. Oh, the oranges were not included. Thanks Brenda and Felicity for a holiday gift that will continue to give throughout the year. Go get your copy before they are all gone. Tell her knittingbrow sent you. :)

Recap Thanksmas 2011

My family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.(2010, 2009 blogposts) It works well and reduces stress because everyone is rested and not rushing between obligatory visit. I've blogged about it before. I rather enjoy the event. For those interested, we draw names for a gift exchange. This year I had my brother Steve and I knit him another pair of socks. I used Ella Rae superwash in navy. I finished these during the Annual Boy's Fishing Trip. Here's a photo of them after he opened them. I find the beer in the top right corner humorous.

My sister Terri had my name in the exchange. She got me a copy of The Knitter's Handy Book of Socks by Clara Parkes. I'm really happy about this gift. This book is filled with great information and a nice range of patterns from a variety of designers. I'm looking forward to reading the book and knitting a few of the patterns.

Beautiful Thing

I'm feeling sad these days. As I mentioned, things are changing in the knittingbrow household and it's taking time for me to adjust. This is natural.

One of the things I like to do when I'm sad is to watch comfort movies. One of my favorite comfort movies is Beautiful Thing. Follow the link for the standard summary. Or just watch the trailer.

The movie stirs many emotions for me. There is a certain scene in the movie I call "going on 17." The tenderness shared between two friend is represented wonderfully in the writing and acting. It's honest and awkward, just like any teenager trying to become comfortable in their own skin.

I love Sandra, the mother of one of the boys. She obviously loves her son and struggles with understanding what she doesn't understand. Fortunately, her love for her son wins.

The soundtrack features Mama Cass and The Mamas and the Papas.

La Cage Aux Folles

A couple of Saturdays ago, I went to Cleveland with Songferret, StageManagerChrissy and knitBS to see the touring company of La Cage aux Folles

It was a delightful show and we had great seats thanks to our theater social calendar coordinator, Songferret. The actor playing Albin, (Christopher Seiber) was full of joy on stage and really brought the house down during the act 1 finale, "I am what I am."

George Hamilton seems tired as he played Albin's partner, Georges. He didn't look comfortable in the role. He was certainly tan. :)

Albin belted out his songs with full gusto, bringing me along for the ride. If you have an opportunity to see the show, I recommend it. It is different than the movie The Birdcage so don't expect the exact storyline. Expect a story of a family who loves one another as another family is starting their life together.

I brought sock knitting with me and snapped this photo. It's the best I could get without a flash and after trying to photoshop it on my iPhone.

A Rose

This rose sticker from the lapel on the lapel of my jacket has special meaning. On Wednesday, I had the honor of being a pall bearer at my BFF's mother's funeral. He asked me if I would help the family.

I said "Yes" without hesitation.

The funeral was small and heart-felt, just as I expected. I was happy Songferret took us up our offer to drive him the to his hometown. Lady Julie, PhotoSteve & I were able to attend the services.

My BFF, Songferret, has a lot of people who care about him. He knows this from the comments left on his Facebook wall when he announced his mother passed away. He knows this from the people who called during calling hours. He knows this from the comments on the virtual guest book on the funeral home website.

I want him to remember that people love him. Thank you for asking me to help. I love you.

Rainbow

Yesterday was a long day for me. Stress caught up with me. I was driving to an appointment and saw this rainbow. It was exactly what I needed to see.

Learning to Use a Chainsaw

My BIL Jack taught me how to use my chainsaw this morning. I brought the manual with me so he could look at it just in case it has significant problems. It didn't. We (he) took it apart and tightened the chain, added chain and gasoline and it started up after a few pulls. This is impressive because I haven't used the chainsaw in almost 10 years (if not longer) and did no preparation for such long storage. Jack did a cut with it and found the chain was very dull so he let me do some cutting with his chainsaw.

After I get the saw started, it worked out pretty well. I cut two of the trees into 18" lengths. I'm looking forward to going home and being able to use my saw on my own. I'm confident I can do the cutting I need. Notice the flannel shirt my sister bought for me. I think it's nice.

After the morning, we went to Planktown Country Market. It's a bulk food store that has spices, cooking ingrediants and an incredible deli. I picked up spices, bread flour and cheese to name a few things. The horshradish cheese is quite tasty. We headed to my niece's house for a nice lunch. I got to hear about her wedding plans. She's almost done and the wedding is almost 11 months away. w00t.

Chop Wood, Knit Lace

I'm visiting my sister and BIL, Jack. Jack has generously agreed to help me learn to use a chainsaw (properly). I've had this chainsaw over 10 year and last used it during the Clinton administration. I need help to adjust the chain, lubricate it and ensure it works. Jack's going to help me take it apart, put it back together and use it to cut some of the logs you see in this picture. I think this is very cool.

I brought a lace project with me that needs completed and worked a bit on it last night. I'll snap a photo of it today.

My sister picked me up a flannel shirt so I can be lumberjack-like. There will be video of the adventure.

Mom Update

A while back I shared that my Mom was in the hospital. Thanks for your kind thougths and well-wishes. She was release from the hospital and has been spending time in a nursing, rehap facility. She's expected to go home on Monday.

We still don't know what exactly they are going to do in the long run.

I'm looking forward to our annual "Thanksmas" celebration. There will be family in from out of town and I'll be seeing a niece and nephew I've never met before.

BTW: I'm finished with my holiday knitting. Are you?

Happy Happy!

Today is my 45th birthday and I opted to go to Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams for my work birthday lunch. I got a trio of Milkiest chocolate in the world, Ugandan vanilla bean, and Cherry lambic sorbet.

It tasted as good as it looks. So good in fact, this is what it looked like about 15 minutes after I got it.

I had a nice dinner with DH and went knitting. Tomorrow, I head to my sister's so my BIL can teach me how to use a chainsaw this weekend. Yes, this event will be vlogged. I also will balance the event by taking a lace knitting project. I figure if I'm going to butch it up, I might as well go way over the top. Lace knitters can't be fearful, neither can lumberjacks.

I don't have a flannel shirt for the lumberjack event but I'm bringing my how chainsaw. Each time I think about using the chainsaw, I think of the Lumberjack song by Monty Python. Have you heard it? Enjoy.

Backstage Lavender Shawl Update

I'm backstage before the first performance Saturday with an update on the lavender shawl. I made a mistake by not keeping the center back stitch plain. I involved it in the YO, k2tog lace pattern.

Here's a close-up of the error. I'm trying to fix this while I have time duringyoday's performances. I'm not sure it will work but I'm going to try.

Update:
I tried and I didn't work. It looks like extra stitches will be added. I'm going to pull out the fishnet lace pattern and start this section over with a bit more attention on what the lace should be doing.

Lavender Shawl

A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with cancer and I'm knitting her a shawl.
It's based on the Boneyard Shawl (rav link) by Stephen West but I'll be adding a fishnet lace as one of the last sections.

She wanted lavender. Here are the color options I gave her:

She has very good taste and selected #3 (going from the left). It's cashmere.

This is the first cast-on attempt. I was not happy so I pulled it out.

Here's the progress by Sunday's second show at the theatre. I made good progress.

I don't think I'll get it finished by Friday. I don't want to shorten the shawl simply because I'm out of time. I know I'll have it finished by Monday.

Moms are Knitworthy

My Mom was in the hospital and is still under medical supervision. I won't go into details on the blog but we're waiting for her skilled team of doctors to get together and discuss the options. (Thanks for the good thoughts to her and those caring for her.)

Last week, my sister sent me this photo of Mom wearing a shrug I designed (& knit) for her 5 or 6 years ago. It was my first knitting using my own pattern. She wanted something to keep her arms and shoulders warm. I could do that! So I bought 10 balls of Noro Silk Garden in a blue color way I knew Mom would like. I basically knit a long scarf with a ribbing at each end and seamed closed some of the arm. (Why I didn't knit more of it in a tube is beyond me.) I finished it to the measurements and gave it to her.

She liked the colors. But I didn't see her wear it. A year ago, I saw it in the top of her closet and asked if she ever wore it. She had but it didn't fit her right. After a short discussion, I knew I could fix it. A bit of alteration later, we have a garment that could be worn comfortably.

Seeing Mom in this after being in the hospital makes me very happy.

Honestly, I think some of my sisters told Mom I didn't think she was knit-worthy because I never saw her wear the shrug even after I fixed it. So she pulls it out of the closet to wear every once in awhile when I visit. That could be true. Regardless, I think Moms are knit-worthy.

Sleepy H Socks

I'm working on another show. I'm Props Master (and floor manager) during the run of the show. The props have turned out nicely (with an emphasis on keeping it simple).
Here's the tavern sign I created:

Sleepy Hollow opens tonight and I have a little time between scene changes to knit. I'm working on toe-up socks using yarn I bought from Susan Yarns in Cleveland. It is a three-ply wool yarn that has a lot of colors.

Yes, I took this picture during tonight's performance with light from my head lamp. I like the way it looks. It am having trouble finding the best gauge. I started with size 1's and that was very tight but I thought it would be okay for the toe. I switched to size 2's and like it better but the toe is too big.

I can get my thumb inside the toe. Too big. *sigh*
I stopped knitting on the socks tonight and will frog them tonight.

I might switch my knitting. I need a black or dark watch cap to keep my head warm while backstage. It gets chilly. It would be cool if I could design something to work with my headlamp. Hmmmmm.

Dalia's Blanket Buddy

I was under a great deal of stress Sunday as I traveled to visit my Mom in the hospital. I packed my current knitting project, the Nutkin socks as well as the repair job I posted about yesterday. Before I left, I wound up two skeins of Claudia Handpaints Chunky Weight wool so I could knit on something fast and not brain taxing.

I cast-on both socks Sunday. See how far I've gone in a short amount of time?

I'm pleased with how quickly these are knitting up. I'm using Brittany US size 6 DPNs. I cast-on 8 STD on a size 3 needle because I think the toe-up cast-on is far too loose when I use DPNs.

I'll be doing the Sweet Tomato Heel by Cat Bordhi. I've opted to do 2X2 rib in the instep for a bit of variety.

I must say I'm glad I took a few minutes to get this yarn ready so I could knit with it. It was very pleasing to have this type of knitting to keep my hands busy and my focus on the here and now with Mom.

Tests are still being run so an informed decision can be made. Thank you for your kind thoughts and words.

Mending Takes Time

I went to visit my Mom in the hospital today. The news is not good and waiting can be a pain but I have knitting to keep me occupied. I didn't drive so I used the time to repair a sweater that knitSB picked up at a thrift store for me. It's a perfectly fine J Crew sweater except the hole on the right sleeve forearm. It looks like the sweater was damaged when the box was cut open. See?

I needed something to take my mind off the reason for my traveling and opted to repair this hole. Mending takes time and I wanted (needed) to get this finished. I have some lace-weight light great alpaca I wanted to use. I was simply going to create a basket weave structure to prevent further stitches from unraveling.

It's not a perfect job beyond securing the garment and it pleases me. I was relieved there was something to take my mind off the reason for the trip.

I took another project to cast-on, toe-up socks out of Claudia's Handpainted Yarns worsted weight yarn (in the color: shark) on US size 6 DPNS. They are very fast and knitting up to a nice fabric. Pictures tomorrow.

Now, if I could just find a toe-up sock pattern with a great heel that I can knit without thinking too much.

Sleepy Hollow Props

I am doing Props and set dressing for the Columbus Children's Theatre production of Sleepy Hollow which opens on October 20. I spent 12 hours at the shop today finalizing the props so I can take them to the theatre for Sunday evening's rehearsal. I want to spend the rest of the week figuring out scene changes.

This sign is to distinguish the Tavern. I'm pleased.

I got to make up the tavern's name. Do you get it?

I have several other items that needed created rather than just repurposed I'll snap a few pictures this week and post if you're interested in seeing my work.

I'm enjoying the yarn, Cobblestone. I am a bit worried that the sicks might be a smidge too tight because when I tried them on they were rather tight going over the heel. But there is more fabric because of the heel, right so I should be ok?

What is seven letters...

I've been playing Words with Friends on my smartphone recently and enjoy putting letters together to make up words I didn't even know I knew. It is extra exciting if I can use all seven tiles. I just started a game and got seven letters to place on the board making a word. I like to use all the tiles and get the reward of feeling smart.

When I saw the letters O F R S E E A, I thought I recognized a word related to knitting. sure enough, and it was seven letters. With (too much) glee, I played the word.

Apparently, faroese is not an appropriate word for a game involving putting tiles on a board and earning the most points. To prove it, the game tells me so.

You hear the tone of voice in this pop-up message, don't you?

Sigh. It's a proper noun describing someone from the Faerose Islands.

Arch-enemy Sock Pattern Beta

Yarmando gave me the privilege to test knit the Beta version of his Arch-enemy sock pattern It is a toe-up pattern with interesting arch shaping and ribbing to snug the fit. The pattern has some improvements to be done to it but the result is a nice sock. so nice in fact that want to knit another pair.

He gave me permission to blog about the test-knit. I hope he is willing to go back and revise the pattern. The world needs interesting sock patterns.

I'm planning a video post after I wash them to give the full review.

August at Otterbein

Songferret and I attended August: Osage County Saturday evening at Otterbein College. Info here.

I thought it a compelling performance with some very talented actors making me experience a wide range of emotions. If you've never seen August, I encourage you to take advantage of a great version of the show.

The show is three acts so be ready for a 3 hour experience. I was engaged throughout the performance as the playwrite does an exceptional job unfolding details of this family in a way that pulls me in to learn more and more. I remember thinking "what could happen next?" There is a next (and a next and a next.)

I was frustrated a few times because actors were speaking over the (nervous) laughter and I was frustrated by not hearing all of the lines. I did have problems hearing lines but this is an issue I have with my hearing in theaters & during performances that are not mic'd.
The set was well-done and fit the stage nicely, taking advantage of levels to convey the 3-story home. I snapped this picture for you.

There is still time to go see this show! It isn't a "happy" show but offers a great theatrical experience.

I sat next to a lady who was interested in my knitting. I was casting-on for my Nutkin socks using the cobblestone yarn. You can see the yarn at the bottom of this picture. :)

Falsettos

Available Light Theatre's current show is Falsettos. Songferret and I saw the show on Saturday night.
I thought this production was well-done and took advantage of the cast's wonderful voices and effective staging. It is a show worth seeing, especially in a more intimate venue.

I didn't get to knit much but I did get a little knitting done before the show started.

I just finished knitting the gusset decreases on Yarmando's test knit. Tomorrow I'll work on the second sock's gusset decreases and then it's just knit until I run out of yarn. I need to finish these socks so I can gauge swatch for the fronkenshteek sock.

Sweater Find

I've recently started going to thrift stores again. I've been losing weight and need some new clothes and have found some wonderful clothes that fit me now. Today's adventure was no different. I found two pairs of brown shoes (that look great after they were polished), two jackets, and a hand-knit Aran sweater. I spotted the sweater and wasn't sure if it was hand-knitted. I could see no tags and there was that special quality about it. I tried it on. It was scratchy and slightly large on me and should fit DH. Here's the sweater:

I'm washing it a couple of times today and putting conditioner on it to soften it. DH has sensitive skin (*giggle*). If he won't wear it, I'll use it as a jacket.

Josh Learns to Spin

I enjoyed Sunday at Wool Gathering with friends. Josh was there and picked upside roving and a free CD drop spindle. Laura gave him a five-minute drop spindle lesson. Five- minutes.
He spun on the way home.

He sent me a picture on Tuesday morning of his first two-ply yarn.

Tuesday! Sigh.
I have four drop spindles, a spinning wheel, and four (or eight) pounds of fiber in my stash and I've not come up with any yarn worth mentioning.

Did I mention he just started knitting in January 2011? He was already a skilled crocheter.
I think Josh is an amazing crafty person. He needs to start a blog to share his fiber adventures.

Rainbow Katriel

I was privileged to test knit Robin Ulrich's newest pattern, The Katriel Shawl. Find details of the pattern here on Robin's Blog.
My finished shawl looks like this:

Yarmando is modeling the Katriel while we were at Wool Gathering today.

Details:
I used 64 grams of Schoppel Wolle Zauberball no: 1153 1564 bedr lot: 319684 (less than one ball).
I used 74 grams of Baby Ull superwash farge 810 lot 25528 (1 full ball and most of the second).
My gauge was looser than desired pattern stitch gauge. My gauge was 20 sts X 10 cm on size 6 circular needles (before blocking). 5 sts/in. I am pleased with the resulting fabric

This was a very pleasant knit and only took about 24-32 hours to knit. I really liked the long color repeat of the Zauberball with the solid navy. I think the effect is quite beautiful.

Now, if I knew who should receive the shawl or perhaps I'll just wear it myself.

Next To Normal

I saw Next To Normal on Saturday afternoon.

To say the least, the Theatre is eye-catching from the street.

I thought the show very well done and deserving of the standing ovation it received. I enjoyed the performance and time with friends. A big thanks to Songferret who was "planful" so we could attend. I drove and missed 4 hours of test knitting time but I did get a few rows done while waiting for the show to begin. Here's a picture of the set (and my knitting).

It was a sold-out Saturday matinee. They have added two more performances to the run because the show has sold very well. if you have an opportunity to see the show, I would recommend it.

Today, I'm going into work to clear the piles of work that have accumulated over the last two weeks and then coming home to get my test knitting done. I'm almost to the exciting edging part and hope to be finished knitting Monday so I can get the pieced blocked and pattern notes to the designer. I can't believe I've been so tired after work that I can't even knit.

I Wore the Tahoe Vest

Wednesday, I wore the Tahoe Vest I completed on the Boys Fishing Trip (or is that Boy's...I need a little help on this, N-cubed).

I'm very happy with the end result. I heard compliments on the vest and they felt great (as did the sweater).

I used the EPS basics for the sweater and the Alberta pattern by Jared Flood for assistance with the finishing.

I'll be knitting more vests. I currently have the Dr Memory Vest on the needles. Yarmando is currently knitting a version of that vest. we both have adjusted the pattern to be in-the-round with steeks (not steaks with BBQ sauce).

I'm currently doing a shawlette test knit that needs completed by Wednesday. I'm a little worried that I'm going to miss the deadline because I'm losing 4 hours of knitting time tomorrow. I hope to vlog about the test knit this weekend. Here's a peek of the garter center section. I am pleased with the colors.

Dressed for stage and screen

Saturday I traveled to see the Katharine Hepburn "Dressed for Stage and Screen" exhibit at Kent State's Museum. My BFF Songferret suggested we see the exhibit and I was glad we went.

I have forgotten how much i enjoy fashion design, especially those details that make a garment extra special. The waistband back that is open at the top:

Those are all made of wool.

There were a few other exhibits on display that we viewed. We had lunch at a local greek place, shopped (I bought another knitting bag & 2 knitting tackle bags...don't tell DH) and drove casually home (via the lodi outlet mall.)

Overall, it was a long drive for a smaller exhibits than I expected but still an enjoyable day. Spending BFF time is always fun!

Red Velvet Cupcake Sandwich

What you are seeing in this image is my celebration of completing my sock knitting. This, dear readers, is a red velvet cupcake sandwich.

To make your own cupcake sandwich, simply locate a cupcake topped with a nice layer of icing. After you remove the paper lining, separate the cupcake horizontally across the cake portion. Take the bottom half of the cake and place on top of the icing. Ta-dah! Consume slowly with a cup of coffee while chatting with friends about knitting.

I'll snap photos of the gift socks so I can update Ravelry next week. I hope the sock fit the recipient. Details coming.

The Weekend Show & Socks

Ever get a great idea for a hand knitted gift and wonder if you have enough time to complete them? What am i thinking? Of course you have. MMC helped me decide what type of socks I could knit for NS as a thank you. I didn't know NS's shoe size but understood he had small feet. I decided on a brightly colored yarn in a heavier weight yarn so I could finish the pair in a week.
The yarn is Interlacements Yarns Toasty Toes in a bright colors from the Interactive Sock Gang back in 2006(?).

I love knitting with this yarn on US size 3 DPNs. I have more Toasty Toes in stash and I will be knitting it up soon in vanilla socks. I think the colors do all the work for me.

I did my gauge swatch and found I'm knitting at 6 sts/inch. I'm using (Saint) Ann Budd's The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns for the standard sock pattern. I found out the person has a size 6 1/2 to 7 shoe size and adjusted my knitting accordingly. By Sunday afternoon, I had finished the leg portion and started the heel flap.

Sunday I saw Jersey Boys on its national tour. I thought the show was enjoyable. I snapped this photo of the stage when we arrived early.

As of Monday night, the gussets have been knit. I think this is great progress. I will get these socks completed by Thursday night so I can gift them on Friday.

Burn, Baby Burn

Every year during the Boys Fijing trip, over to start and tend to the burn pile. This year was no exception. There was a nice burn pile gathered and I started it only with a match rather than the roman candle. Less dramatic but still effective.

I'll post additional picture and video later to give you a complete experience. What I liked this year was that we sat around the fire (although not that close because it was really a hot fire) and chatted for about an hour and a half. It is the stuff that makes great memories.

I spent the day organizing my knitting "tackle" and have 10 standard tackle kits to put in each of my knitting bags.

The contents of my standard knitting tackle includes: (seek & find) scissors, knit chek, zipper pouch with coiless safety pins and stitch markers, bread ties, tape measure, sweetener, sticky notes, crochet hooks in two sizes (one large, one small), writing utensil, tapestry needles (blunt and sharp), and crochet thread (size 10 for lifelines in two colors). I also have a notebook for sketches or notes as I knit.

for stitch markers. Not just any stitch markers, coiless safety pins. I look for them in the jewelry findings sections to get them when they are on sale.

This picture shows that I'm well-stocked in coiless pins. That is until I cast-on every.single.skein of yarn from my stash. I might need to rush out and get a few more packages, just in case.

Cast-On Review (a love letter to Brenda)

I started this blog post 7/24/2009. I just saw a tweet from Brenda that Cast-on episode 100 is DONE! I thought it appropriate to finish it and get it up in honor of the 100th episode.

I recently had to rebuild my iTunes library (back in 2009). During this adventure, all my podcasts were reloaded on my iPod. I decided that I would listen to these archived 'casts while I was on the Boy's Fishing Trip. It was like chatting with a long-time friend.

The second podcast that I started listening to is Cast-On with Brenda Dayne. The first was KnitCast with Marie Irshad. I miss Marie's podcast. Brenda's comfort talking and sharing her ideas makes me want to travel to Wales and have a cup of tea with her, knit and go out and watercolor together.

A Knitter's Manifesto - Artist's Edition CD is available and has been requested as my one Holiday gift for 2011. DH asked what the KM was all about. I thought I'd vlog about it so everyone who reads understands why I want a copy. He told me not to buy a copy of it so my fingers are crossed.

Lopi Sweater Redux

After finishing the Tahoe Vest, I picked this Lopi Sweater back up to spend some time on figuring out the next steps so I could finish the last 40-some-odd rows of the yoke and call this a finished object. Lopi Sweater troubles happened on a fishing trip back in 2007. I blogged about them here if you'd like to see what happened. I'll wait here, you go look. It's been 4 years and one week since I put this sweater away. I pulled the project out of the bag and reviewed the pattern notes.

I had lots of notes and working copies. I did have one very important piece of paper, an enlarged copy of the chart filled with handwritten notes. On the top of this page, I wrote these notes:

I'm glad I remembered to do this. This was a great idea from my former pattern design and fashion construction professor in college. "If you understand the mistake you've made, take notes about it so you know were you left off when you go back to the design."
As I reviewed the notes, I realized where the problem occurred. I had two different pattern instructions with me and was referring to the wrong sections. I've since removed the non-essential pattern so I can use the proper pattern.

Tonight, I pulled out the knitted 16 yoke rows and put all the stitches back on the needle. I will count the total stitches so I can work the pattern properly.

The pattern is #5 from the Reynolds Lopi 82228, Fashions Inspired by Tradition pamphlet. (rav link) The Ravelry link to my project is here. I read on Ravelry this is a very loose sweater.

Now I'm thinking I'd like to make this into a cardigan. I wonder if I can do this without frogging. I think I can and will review my design options. I'll be using steeks again. :)

I used a handspun yarn I purchased at Lofty Lou's in Placerville, California and a purple yarn that reminds me of Silky Wool (held two strands together).

Wizard's Yard Sale

I had an opportunity to go to the opening of the Wizard's Yard Sale exhibit at the Starbrick Gallery in Nelsonville, Ohio.

I love this chair and I'm surprised at how comfortable it is to sit in. If I had this chair, I promise I would use my powers for Good, not Evil. :)

It was a lovely time driving down with Lady Julie and Songferret. Got to have dinner with Trixie and enjoy each others company. Paul gave me a necklace he made from waxed linen. It's lovely and knitSB is a bit jealous.

Tahoe Vest Steeks

Hooray! I completed the crochet part of the crocheted steek last night. It went well once I added the light yellow yarn to guide me. It took two incorrect attempts before if put in the guide yarn. I may be a slower learner but I'm happy with the result. Steek cutting will happen this afternoon in full sunlight so I can see and I'm not tired. Steek cutting when tired is not recommended. Let's not talk about that.

Tahoe Vest Update

This is a vest I've been working on for 4 years. I've lost the pattern notes and I'm using the Elizabeth Percentage System as the pattern basics. But I've lost my pattern notes and years have past so I'm taking stock of my progress and moving forward. I think all that's left is joining the sleeves and accomplishing the steeks. To finish, I need to put the edging on the armholes and the v-neck. Progress report later. I am using the Alberta pattern by Jared Flood as my help.

iPod Surgery

Three weeks back I dropped my iPod. It hit facedown from about 4 feet.

Once I started breathing,
I tried to get it to start working. It didn't work. I got a blank, white screen. And I continue to have the blank, white screen even after I've reset the device following the Apple recommended guidelines (probably 30 times).

I've come to terms that my 5 year old 60 GB iPod classic is gone and won't be replaced for awhile. I'm making other accommodations to cope.

I decided to explore the inside of an iPod.

After pulling it apart, my brother suggested that the LCD screen may not be the problem. It could be the hard drive. He is getting an adapter to check.

This might not fix anything but it is fun to play. Anyone have ideas on what creative thing I could do with a busted iPod?

Test knitting a beta pattern

Cheesecake Success

I make cheesecake. After that post, I got helpful suggestions to prevent cracking. I put a pan o water on the lower shelf and followed the recipe's cooling instruction of cooling for 30 minutes with the oven door closed and then cracking the door to finish cooling. Here is the result.

10 stitch

knitSB & I are going to be uncles for the first time on his side of the family. Baby is due in a few weeks so what do knitters do? We knit baby stuff!
Here's the progress knitSB made on the 10 stitch blanket for the baby.

He's using this Plymouth superwash yarn.

The price is $29 per 420 yard skein. I think this worsted weight yarn would make wonderful socks.

The LYS staff wound it for him and used an electric winder. Why would anyone use an electric winder? It is too tight and didn't wind well. Can you see the prolapse portion of the center-pull ball? And that is the bottom of the ball.

Sigh. I would have rewound the skein to fix the error and relax the tension.

I bought some organic cotton to make a simple washcloth and a baby toy. I've not started them yet. Details later.

BWAPS Completed!

I wore my completed Blue Waves and Piers socks today. I pleased with the results.

I'm pleased so much with the fabric that I'm considering casting on another pair of socks on small needles. I think I will wait and work on the toe-up socks from the Yarmando pattern Fiendish.

Joshual Pattern

Josh Raptured

I surround myself with great people. This continues to be true as witnessed by the significant number of my fellow knitters have been caught in the rapture.

Josh appears to have left his first lace project behind. He was knitting the Hemlock Ring Blanket (Ravelry link) made popular by Jared Flood of Brooklyn Tweed fame. He's was using Fisherman's Wool in a natural gray and it was turning out beautifully.

I wonder if Josh will come back and knit with us again. I bet he'd have some great stories to tell.

Visiting The Columbus Art Museum

Photo Steve and I visited the Columbus Museum of Art on Sunday. Have you visited lately? Now is your chance because the museum is free July and August.

The current exhibit, Street Talk and Spiritual Matters: Aminah's Mt. Vernon Avenue is filled with colorful and emotionally charged images inspired by Aminah's childhood neighborhood. Using various media, the artist uses her "voice" to immortalize the impact community has to its residents. I'm a fan of her work. The layers and layers of cloth, buttons, paint, paper, thread and found objects bring me close to the work and stir a desire to learn more.

This exhibit has some pieces never seen before from the 1992 book, The Teachings. Individually these pieces emote a deep understanding of the Teachings. Together, the pieces beautifully depict a spiritual life across time. I was disappointed the Museum Shop didn't have copies of the book. I reserved it from CML.

Beautifully displayed, this exhibit highlights a local hero who uses her art to make people aware of important matters close to home.

I was delighted to see mock-ups and drafts of her book A Street Called Home. As an artist, I really value seeing another artist's process. I would love to see Aminah's studio. I could only imagine. :)

I would recommend this exhibit. Tell them I sent you.

The Cultural Hub of the Midwest

Happy Birthday, Cat. Today is her birthday and she wanted to celebrate at Bob's Bar with karaoke. knitSB and I showed up to join the fun. There was singing, drinking and some pool. And knitting. See?

It was Sunday and I had to cast-on something for Cast-On Sunday. I am working a washcloth in a simple cotton yarn on US size 5 circular needles. A simple pattern, appropriate for bar knitting. I selected a light colored yarn so I could see. The bar was well lit so that wasn't a problem.

I played two games of pool. (or is that shot two games of pool?) I'm not skilled at pool. I snapped this photo of my knitting and one of the bar stools.

I did not know that Bob's Bar is the "cultural hub of the Midwest." It's in print so it must be true. :)

Observations (a.k.a. Lessons Learned)

It is early morning as I write this post. I want to capture my thoughts before they fade as the sun rises.

These are my observations or lessons learned.

Be genuine about my feelings. Face it, I need to be honest to myself before I can be honest with anyone else. If I am angry, the sooner I admit it the faster I will be able to cope with it and move through it to get where I want to be.

Sometimes there is better living through chemistry. I would be dead without insulin. The sooner I accept this is what I need right now, the sooner I can get on with living and contribute to those around me.

Change things often. I am a creature of habit. It is a good idea to make changes to make sure the way I am working really is the best way for me right now. It challenges me to pay attention to what is going on and what needs to happen.

Pay attention to what is happening. Seeing the obvious requires noticing small things, big things and everything in between. This takes work that I'm not always willing to give. When I notice things, I am able to adjust my actions to align with my purpose.

Keep a journal. It helps to write/draw/create something everyday. It captures moments in time that I want to remember. No one encouraged me to do this growing up and that makes me sad. Journaling allows mento understand what is going on in myself. Whatever is going on in myself is valuable. It also helps me pay attention.

I have impact. I matter. I don't understand what that impact is every time. I want to understand but that's not what's important. I don't need to understand. I need to remember
that I have impact (positive and negative).

Tell people what I love about them. Say it so they can hear it from you. Say it so I can hear myself say it. I realize this is scary because people could reject what I am saying. They are my feelings and they matter.

Create and share. Knitting is a way I share myself with the world. Regardless of the project (cost, yarn used, size, time spent), handmade items have artistic value and make the world beautiful. I created a lot of artwork in college. Most of it is sitting in a room, unused and unappreciated. It may be time to let it go to make room for more creativity.

Be gracious. Say "thank you," "please," and "you're welcome." These are really magic words, especially when said with meaning and not lost in a bunch of vocal blathering that takes the power away from that being acknowledged. "Thank you BUT it was no big deal..." lessens the impact.

I don't like to... There are things I don't like to do (cut grass, housework, math, etc.) and that's okay. it is not good or bad. It just is. The sooner I accept this, the sooner I will be happy with myself.

Stop "shoulding" myself. "I should..." leads me into feeling less than I am. Am I doing something because you think I should or because I've given it thought and think it is true? I can't just accept what others tell me without considering it through my own eyes.

Get second opinions. This helps me cope when I am "shoulding" myself. Broadening my understanding really helps me.

Ask for what I need instead of being afraid of what people will think about me. This is currently a hard lesson for me and is taking time to change. When I ask, I give people an opportunity to share what is good about them with me.

Release clutter. Things/Stuff/Baggage clog up my "energy flow," make me numb and slow me down. Donate it, give it away, trash it or put it in its proper place. This goes for emotional as well as physical things/stuff/baggage.

Take more risks. Scary and exciting, taking risks gives amazing results. Start small and build up to larger risks is best. What is a big risk for me may appear small to others. They don't understand. They don't have to understand to support me. I have to tell them the impact (outloud) so they can understand.

Read. I am not much of a reader of books. It doesn't matter what I read as long as I'm taking in information and adding to my brain power. The more I use my brain, the stronger it gets. As an adult, I don't remember being read to as a child. I remember seeing my dad read a lot as a kid. He read magazines, newspapers, users manuals and the like. It wasn't until I was in college I saw him reading a book. Dad was one of the most intelligent people I know. He got that way by reading and applying what he learned.

Spend time with people I love. Make time to visit my family and friends. Call my mom/spouse/child/friend in the middle of the day just to say "Hi." I might be the remedy for their ill.

Post comments on blogs, no matter what I think others will say about my comment. Lurking is okay for awhile but people like to hear from others.

Set goals and be willing to adjust them. *Get clear about the outcome of the project, stop and check progress, adjust goal, repeat from *.

I Make Cheesecake

Hi, my name is knittingbrow and I make cheesecake.

I enjoy making cheesecake a lot but don't enjoy eating it. I find this strange. The process of baking one is very enjoyable. It also helps that many people like the cheesecakes I make filling my desire to make people happy.

It is much easier to make cheesecakes now that I have a Kitchen Aid mixer. I can whip up the cheesecake in about 20 minutes rather than the 45 it took with a handheld mixer. This doesn't include the baking time.

This is a picture of the cheesecake I made for Friday to celebrate my colleague T's birthday.

I've not been successful in baking cheesecakes that don't crack. It might be that I mix them too much. Do you know how to get a cheesecake not to crack?

Add a bit of fresh raspberries as a topping and we have a happy birthday celebration. Here's the action shot.

She's happy about the cheesecake. I'm happy with the result.

Baby Squash Hat

I spend the evening watching The Killing and knitting a Baby Squash Hat.

the pattern is from 101 Designer One Skein Wonders edited by Judith Durant.

I adjusted the pattern to fit my yarn. The pattern calls for size 6 needles but I didn't have a set available. I used Lily Chin Designer Collection Grammercy (this is how it is spelled on the label) on a size 5 needle. The pattern calls for cast-on of 64 but I added 8 sts to make the hat large enough for a baby.

It was a quick knit and I like the look of the hat. I have a few skeins of this yarn that I've not used. I got it on deep discount 4 years back. The "Lily Chin Designer Collection" yarn didn't sell very well. It was pricier than comparable yarns. The yarn split easily and untwisted as I was casting-on. Once I got into the knitting, the yarn didn't split.

I have about half the skein left and plan on making a second hat because it was such an easy and quick knit I could have it be my travel knitting.

I picked up the yarn to knit socks. I still might knit a pair but on a size 3 needle.

I liked this hat pattern enough to make a similar hat but adding further "knitter's choice" to the pattern. Blogging about that hat soon.

The Joshual in progress

I've mentioned Josh on the blog before. He is an amazingly quick knit learner.

Just last week, he was designing his own lace which KnitMeredith is test knitting the lace shawl, The Joshual.

I snapped a picture of the progress tonight.

It is being knit with a Noro yarn I think is cotton, wool and silk (with nylon thrown in). I like the simple pattern and the color.

But wait, did you notice that knot? What, you didn't see it? Let me help you with that. Here's a close-up.

Second Forethought Heel Turned

Yesterday I was able to complete the second forethought heel on the Blue Waves and Piers Socks.

I'm pleased with the side view of the heel.
It's the head on view of the heel that annoys me. Can you see why?

I knew something wasn't quite right when I was kitchenering the heel. I actually paused and looked carefully at that stitch and knew it was weird. I couldn't tell if I went in P-wise when it should have been K-wise or vice-a-versa. I went on, scared I was going to drop stitches and such.

sigh

I've come to terms with that stitch being wonky.

Lesson learned: my gut instinct is pretty good. I should trust it more often.

BW&PAH

I wanted to blog a bit more about my Blue Waves and Piers Afterthought Heels. This is the second pair of Waves and Piers socks I've knit, both using the Kaffe Fassett Regia sock
yarn. I do like the colors and what how well the yarn and pattern work well together. For this second pair, I dropped down to a 2.25 mm needle from a 2.5 mm to firm up the fabric. I'm quite pleased with the progress. Just a fee more rounds before I start decreasing for the toe on the first sock.

I like the forethought sock used in this pattern. It fits me well and keeps the color stripping going in a very nice manner. It involves putting stitches on scrap yarn, provisionally casting-on stitches and knitting what is essentially a toe. It involves ending with a kitchener stitch to close off the heel. I like how mine turned out.

I thought it was quite fun to have the gray/purple be used for the kitchener stitch. I did it without reading my instructions. (go me!) This is the heel not worn on a heel so you can see I do have some pointy ends that I'd eventually like to learn not to have.

Do you know how to not have those points? Please share your ideas.

The heel uses a crochet provisional cast-on using a waste yarn. Easy enough for me to do. This is my favorite provisional cast-on. It is unnoticeable when done properly. I didn't do it properly. Can you see where I did my cast-on?

My lesson learned: Use waste yarn that is about the same weight as the yarn being knit. I did not do this. Instead I used a worsted weight cotton yarn. Worsted weight is nowhere close to a sock weight yarn. I know this. Duh. I also noticed that when I tried to pick up the stitches to knit down the sock, I twisted some of the stitches. I blame this on my trying to pick these up during our Thursday night knitting where the lighting wasn't the best. I won't bother me all that much (really, I won't let it bother me because it is on the bottom of my foot and you won't see it).

I have used a smaller weight yarn for my second heel and will report the findings when I'm finished with the second sock.

I hope to have these socks finished by next week so I can think about casting on a new project for Cast-On Sunday.

I hate driving in rain

While driving Saturday, I met some rain. You know the rain I'm talking about...the storm that shows up expectantly and sits there while you try to move through it. This rain came just as I was on the highway behind three semi-trucks. Semis really spray and make it hard for me to drive.

And I was hydroplaning. Fun.

Don't worry. I wasn't texting or using my phone during the worst of it. I had to turn off my iPod while I was driving so I could concentrate. I shot this in the afterglow.

I had time to work on my Blue Waves and Piers socks today. This is my second pair of these out of the Kaffee Fasset Regia sock Yarn. I really like how the color and pattern work together.

I'm using my 2.25 mm needles and find the knitting slower than I like because the yarn and needles are just so dang small. ;)

I work both socks at the same time using separate sets of DPNs. I am ready to do the "forethought heel" on the second sock. It isn't difficult, just a little clunky on the DPNs and by the fact that I didn't put the sts not being worked on scrap yarn. I think I will do that for the second sock.

I've decided that I need to finish these socks before I attend a 3rd reincarnated sock out of the orange Creatively Dyed yarn.

The first life:
The heel needed healing.

The second life:

I shortened the foot by 1 inch and the heel hits wrong. *ugh*
I added 5 short rows in the heel flap to lengthen it so knitSB would like it better.
The cast-off was too ~~girly~~ loose for him. I used the knit two, *pass sts back to left needle, k2tog through the back loop, knit one, repeat from *. I like this bind-off a lot but it doesn't work for the recipient.

The third life:

I pulled it out and will knit top down socks for him. I know how to knit top down socks and know the heel fits him. I expect there are better toe-up socks patterns to allow adjustments (evil, no less) but I wanted to knit a second pair using this nice pattern.

The lesson learned:
Not every foot likes the same toe-up sock pattern.
I loved following this pattern from my iPhone. I didn't use paper to print the pattern. How green of me.
I like WendyKnits (free) patterns. They are easy to follow and this one worked for my foot well. I think her Faro Easy Shawl is next after I finish two projects. Visit back for details.

I'm a very lucky person.

This past Sunday I was knitting with my peeps and Knit Meredith was called up for the Rapture. Just last month it was Yarmando and now a second person I knit with got the call.

Knit Meredith was generous and passed on the Rapture. She opted to stay and continue her work on the Windschief hat she's knitting out of llama yarn. The West Knits Design is part of a commitment she made with Josh. She committed to finish the project and not allow it to be a NoFO (No Finished Object) (registered trademark).

I wonder who will be called to the Rapture next?

Healing the Heel

Well crap. I cast on a pair of socks for knitSB and was measuring my progress periodically by having him try on the sock. It seemed to be going well untiI had him try the socks on.

Oh, did I forget to tell you I finished the socks on Friday night? He was trying on the socks before I ran in the ends.

Look at that heel! it is at least a half inch too long. The only way I knew how to fix the length is to rip back past the gusset increases so I could start the gussets earlier. I did this. and was able to turn the heel on one sock in about 3 hours. That includes the progress on both socks :)

I made at alteration to the pattern and added some short rows on the (non-existant) heel flap. This will help the sock to fit properly.

A few months back I posted how I repaired the toe on a pair of socks. I picked the pair out of the drawer to wear yesterday to wear and discovered a hole in the 1X1 ribbed leg. These were knit using Koigu KPPM. I don't remember the needle size.

Bummer. I think it is time to toss these socks. They were my second pair of toe-up socks and I used the WendyKnits.net basic pattern. I've knit a few more pairs and have learned some different techniques.

knitSB's Sourdough bread

We like bread.
We like baking bread with our BIL Jack.
The last time we visited, Jack gave knitSB a sourdough bread starter. We've been able to keep it alive for the last 4 months.
Here's a picture of the first loaves made using the starter.

I took this picture a couple of months ago but wanted to share it with Joanne so she could show BIL Jack. knitSB was very proud of how the bread turned out. It was rather good and I enjoyed a lot of it thinly sliced, toasted and buttered as a snack.

I'm making another batch of bread before we start a new diet. Bread won't be on the menu for several months but I'll be able to keep the starter alive. I might even make bread for people at work or our neighbor, Judy. I gave her a loaf from last week's baking but haven't heard how it was.

I had a good time attending the 2011 Great Lakes Fiber Show with Yarmando & Darlamour.

On the left we have Woodbrook in colorway Toco. A 100% superwash merinao 250 yards (gauge 4-5 sts per inch on a 7-9)
Center we have Valencia in colorway Ramsay. A 100% extra fine superwash merinao 250 yards (gauge 4-5 sts per inch on a 7-9)
On the right we have Woodbrook in colorway Julian. A 100% superwash merinao 250 yards (gauge 4-5 sts per inch on a 7-9)

I wanted to find worsted weight superwash so I could knit socks. I cast-on with the Valencia on a size 6 and I don't think it's a true worsted weight. I'm going to have to go to a size 3 to get a firm enough gauge for socks. I'm waiting to knit these until I finish another pair of socks.

He picked up a sweater's worth of yarn.

The best line of the visit came from darlamour. "What's with the kkk sheep?" I think the picture explains it all.

I picked up an ecolution hemp bag TRT1: The Rainforest which is the perfect size for a pair of socks.

I had a good time and appreciated being driven up and enjoying the lemon shake-up.

Next time I'll show you my basket. You know you want to see my basket. It's okay. You wouldn't be the first person to ask to see it.

At Last the "Last Supper Socks"

My "Last Supper Socks" were finished on Sunday and served up today.

These socks were knit using US size 1 DPNs with Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn leftovers. The pattern is one of Yarmando's Toe-up sock pattern drafts from 2 years ago. That's right....these socks took me almost 2 years to knit. I think mostly because they were in such a small needle size for me.

I'm pleased with the result. They fit well and the pattern was easy. Did you see the heel flap?

I had trouble with my DPNs snapping while I used them. WTF? I sent three of the four broken needles back to Colonial Needles company with a note of disappointment in the quality of the needles and I suspect there was a manufacturing problem.

Riblet Warmer

I'm going to teach a Ribwarmer class soon and wanted a sample to show what students would be learning in class. I needed to get a piece knit quickly so i followed the pattern but reduced everything by 50%. I think it is quite lovely and cute. Here's the front.

The yarn is Noro Kureyon using a US size 10.5 needles.

I completed the front short rows differently. This side has been slipped and turned with no wrapping. I think you can see it has a slight open design feature.

The other side was done with wrap and turn short rows.

I'm not sure which I like better. Which do you like?

Last Supper Socks-Update

I am currently knitting on the last Last Supper Sock.
I finished the first one (finally) Sunday afternoon at knitting.

Don't mind the markers. I need to keep them there so the sock match.

I've been working on these socks for almost 2 years. I am pleased with the fit, pattern and colors. These are knit using size 2.25 mm dpns, I think. I've broken 4 dpns while knitting them. More on that with the final vlog about the project.

I hope to finish the knitting this week. The yarn is Noro Sock Kureyon.

European Papers

This month includes some nice altered books. I snapped a few pictures

Upstairs is a studio and supply shop with oodles of book making supplies. It is a wonderful shop and requires some additional investigation.

When my iPhone is powering off or "thinking" about loading a page I see this image on the screen. It rotates clockwise. Rather the lightest spike moves quickly clockwise while the spikes behind it fade slowly.

Cast-on Sunday Monday

My friend Cat thinks Sundays are the day to cast-on new projects. When I was knitting on Sunday, I didn't have time to start a new project so I did my Sunday cast-on Monday. Progress has been steady. I'm done with the heel and starting with the gusset decreases. I expect to have it completed by Sunday so I can cast-on the second sock for Cast-on Sunday.

The suggestion for my socks is the Golf/Athletic Socks patter by Schurch & Parrott. There is an errata for the pattern here, which gives you a full copy of the pattern. I'm using Cascade Fixation on size 5 DPNs.

I started a pair of "Evil Sock Genius" toe-up socks almost two years ago using a draft of Yarmando's pattern. I picked up the socks this weekend and completed the second heel and heel flap, put the two socks together and noticed something was not right. The heel flap on the first sock was too narrow and needed fixed. So I frogged it.

Then I got lost in figuring out where I was in the pattern.

Evil Sock Genius to the rescue! This picture is Don tinking back and helping me get back into the pattern correctly. He identified where I was and let me take over.

Thanks for the help, Don. I was able to turn the heel and get 2/3 of the heel flap completed.

Please note the use of DPNs. :)

I'm enjoying a visit in Cleveland and decided to walk to Fine Points yarn shop on Larchmere in Cleveland near Shaker Square. This isn't my first visit to the shop and it probably won't be my last. This house is filled to the brim with yarn, needles and fashions (upstairs) and is more a boutique than just a yarn shop. The yarn is crammed into shelves that sometimes explode as I walk by or consider touching a skein or two.

One annoying fact about the shop is re owner does not price the yarn. If I want to find put the price, I have to ask a staff member to look it up for me on the computer. Reminds me if the saying "if you have to ask for the price, you probably can't afford it.". True that.

There are things I enjoy about the shop. They have lots and lots of knitting needles. Always a great thing.The shop has a lot of samples and designs by the owner or staff. Talking to the designer when I'm considering a project is a major bonus for me. They have a lot of Noro, Schaefer (spelling?), and other high end yarns. I love seeing these in person. They also have a nice selections of buttons if you need them. I find most of the staff helpful and rather pleasant.

The owner tends to put me off and I don't know if it is because I'm a male in her store or if she is interrupted by my being there. My most pleasant visits have been when the staff are on their own and chat with me about yarn, patterns and what they are knitting. And they do this while helping other customers. :)

If you stop by the shop, make sure to go upstairs to see some of the work horse and sale yarns. Plan to spend time looking around and be willing to take the yarn to the cashier for a price check. Take extra money. I find their retail a bit higher than other LYSs.

Apparently the answer to the universe is 42. My trip meter on my car just turned to 42.0 when I finished some traveling the week. I'll be listening to my car a bit more carefully. :)

I think 42 is from "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" but I'm not certain. Do you know? Please leave a comment and you'll be "my favorite."

My knitting in the wild

As a knitter, I enjoy seeing my knitting projects "in the wild." You know what I mean, don't you. Seeing something I've knit being worn without the person knowing that I'm going to be there. Do you like this?

Recently I visited my sister and her husband. I spotted some socks I knit for her in 2007. Here's the picture of the socks when I originally gave them to her.

and she was very happy to get them. See?

I love this photo. The smile is perfect.

Three and a half years later, she still has the socks and wears them. I snapped this picture as proof.

This is a picture of my poor toe repair of my second toe-up sock knit in Koigu yarn. I wore the socks twice and ended up with a hole in the toe. I was unhappy and put the socks away for awhile. Actually, they were in hibernation for 5 years. I found them recently and added them to my to-do list. I did a poor darning of them with some left over Twisted Sisterz Jazz. I might try to felt the toes and heels just to get some more wearing time for these socks. Of course, I could just knit another pair. I have more yarn.

I enjoyed my knitting group on Sunday. Two new crafters joined us. I got this toe fixed and also rebound of the ribbing on the first toe-up socks I knit. Picture to follow.

This is a picture of a sign I have hanging on my office wall. This has been a very busy week at work with meetings discussing new projects and understanding the big picture. It has been a good week.

At 3:30 today it all caught up with me.

I've not had time this week to process all this new information and determine what needs to happen next. I will do that Sunday night. But tonight is a night to unwind. I don't know if I'll be knitting or just staring into space.

I feel good.

Just three weeks ago, I taught Josh to knit. Well, I helped what he saw online to make sense. He worked on the obligatory scarf but he started to make up his own pattern by adding cables. I think he is a courageous knitter.

This is a picture of his new scarf. Using size 15 US needles and Bernat Roving, he cast-on Monday night. He's using 2 skeins so it will be almost 10 feet long. He's almost finished. Well done!

Josh is the guy who encourages me to crochet. I really appreciate is willingness to help me and answer my questions without me feel silly.
